Make tender, flavorful pulled pork using your slow cooker with this simple honey garlic recipe. This hands-off method yields perfect shredded pork for sandwiches or meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt), trimmed of excess fat
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Place the pork shoulder into the basin of your slow cooker.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt until combined.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture over the pork shoulder in the slow cooker.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is very tender.
  5. Carefully remove the pork shoulder from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board or baking sheet.
  6. Use two forks to shred the pork completely. Discard any large pieces of fat.
  7. Skim any excess fat from the liquid remaining in the slow cooker.
  8. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it well with the honey garlic sauce. Let it sit on the WARM setting for 15 minutes before serving to absorb the flavor.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can sear the pork shoulder on all sides in a hot skillet before adding it to the slow cooker.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove about 1 cup of the cooking liquid and simmer it on the stovetop until it reduces by half, then pour it back over the shredded pork.
  • Serve this pulled pork on hamburger buns with coleslaw or over rice.
