Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups chopped apples (about 3-4 medium apples, peeled and cored)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in the vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Press about two-thirds of the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and water.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the liquid has thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the baking pan.
  • Crumble the remaining dough over the apple layer.
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
  • Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add milk a tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired drizzling consistency.
  • Drizzle the glaze over the cooled bars.
  • Cut into bars and serve.

Notes

  • Use your favorite variety of apples. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji apples work well.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of ground cloves to the apple filling.
  • Ensure the bars are completely cooled before glazing for the best results.
