Follow this simple recipe to make tender garlic butter shrimp coated in a rich, creamy Parmesan sauce. This dish cooks quickly, making it ideal for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side until pink and just cooked through. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the same skillet. Add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Pour in the white wine or broth and let it simmer for 1 minute, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  5. Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until the sauce is smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  7. Return the cooked shrimp to the skillet and toss gently to coat them completely in the sauce.
  8. Stir in the fresh parsley. Serve immediately over pasta, rice, or with crusty bread.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the shrimp; they cook very fast. Remove them from the pan before making the sauce to prevent toughness.
  • Use freshly grated Parmesan cheese for the best melting quality and flavor in your sauce.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, let the cream simmer for an extra minute or two before adding the cheese.
