Make a quick and flaky apple strudel using store-bought puff pastry. This recipe delivers classic cinnamon apple flavor without the effort of making dough from scratch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons milk or water (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and nuts. Mix gently until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, unfold one sheet of puff pastry. Brush the edges lightly with the melted butter.
  4. Spoon half of the apple filling onto the center of the pastry sheet, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides.
  5. Fold the long sides of the pastry over the filling, overlapping slightly. Press the ends to seal. Place the seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the second pastry sheet and remaining filling.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk or water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of both strudels evenly with the egg wash. Cut three small slits in the top of each strudel to allow steam to escape.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before slicing. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, brush the pastry with melted butter before adding the egg wash.
  • For a crispier crust, you can sprinkle coarse sugar over the egg wash before baking.
