Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced flank steak with soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Toss to coat evenly. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Sear the beef for 1-2 minutes per side until browned. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, brown sugar, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  5. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Return the seared beef to the skillet. Toss to coat the beef in the sauce. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the beef is heated through and coated in the glossy sauce.
  7. Serve immediately over cooked white rice, garnished with sliced green onions.

Notes

  • For a more tender steak, you can freeze it for about 30 minutes before slicing. This makes it easier to slice thinly.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to your preference for heat.
  • If you don’t have oyster sauce, you can substitute with an additional tablespoon of soy sauce and a teaspoon of sugar.
