Ingredients
Scale
1 loaf (16 ounces) French bread or sturdy white bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 pound bulk pork sausage, cooked and drained
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
8 large eggs
2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange half of the bread cubes in an even layer on the bottom of the dish.
Sprinkle half of the cooked sausage, half of the onion, and half of the cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese over the bread layer. Repeat with the remaining sausage, onion, and cheeses.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and sausage layers in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the plastic wrap.
Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, use cubed croissants instead of French bread.
You can substitute cooked, crumbled bacon for the sausage.
If you are short on time, you can bake this immediately after assembly, but the texture will be less strata-like.
