Make simple, tender blackberry dumplings on the stovetop using this old-fashioned Southern recipe. This one-pot dessert cooks quickly and tastes like comfort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Combine blackberries, water, 1/2 cup of the sugar, and lemon juice in a large saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring gently.
  2. While the berries simmer, prepare the dumpling dough. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  5. Drop the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls directly onto the simmering berry mixture. Leave a small space between each dumpling.
  6. Cover the saucepan tightly and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid. The dumplings will steam and become tender.
  7. Gently stir in the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Simmer uncovered for 2 more minutes until the syrup thickens slightly.
  8. Serve warm in bowls, spooning extra syrup over the top.

Notes

  • For a richer syrup, use 1/4 cup of the sugar in the berry mixture and add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of cold water during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
  • Serve these warm dumplings with vanilla ice cream or heavy cream poured over them.
  • If using frozen blackberries, do not thaw them before cooking.
