A creamy, layered banana pudding featuring vanilla wafers, fresh bananas, and a rich, homemade custard. This recipe is easy to assemble and perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (5 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 4 large ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 box (11 ounces) vanilla wafers
  • 4 cups cold water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the cold water and instant vanilla pudding mix for two minutes. Let the mixture stand for five minutes to thicken.
  2. Gently fold the thawed whipped topping into the pudding mixture until fully combined.
  3. In a large serving dish, create a base layer using one-third of the vanilla wafers.
  4. Arrange half of the sliced bananas over the wafer layer.
  5. Spread half of the pudding mixture evenly over the bananas.
  6. Repeat the layers: wafers, remaining bananas, and then the remaining pudding mixture.
  7. Top the pudding with the remaining vanilla wafers.
  8. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least four hours, or preferably overnight, before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute the instant pudding mix with a homemade cooked vanilla custard.
  • Slice bananas just before assembling to reduce browning.
  • This dessert tastes best after chilling for several hours, allowing the wafers to soften.
