Ingredients
Scale
8 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1 package (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thick wedges or halves, depending on size.
Unroll the crescent roll dough. Separate the dough into 8 triangles.
Place one apple piece on the wide end of a dough triangle. Roll the dough up around the apple, tucking in the sides to seal it completely. Place the wrapped apple seam-side down in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Boil for 1 minute, then remove from heat.
Carefully pour the hot sauce evenly over the wrapped apples in the baking dish.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving warm. Spoon extra sauce from the pan over each dumpling.
Notes
For a richer flavor, substitute Sprite or Mountain Dew for the water in the sauce mixture.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, let the sauce boil for 2-3 minutes instead of 1 minute.
You can use puff pastry sheets cut into squares instead of crescent rolls for a different texture.
