Enjoy a warm and cozy start to your day with this Apple Cinnamon French Toast Bake. It’s the perfect comforting breakfast for crisp fall mornings, bringing together sweet apples and cinnamon in a delightful casserole.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, sliced 1-inch thick
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 medium apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji), cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and arrange them in a single layer in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened.
  4. Arrange the sliced apples over the top of the bread mixture.
  5. Sprinkle with chopped pecans, if using.
  6. Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the French toast bake is golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For an extra cinnamon flavor, you can sprinkle a little more cinnamon on top before baking.
  • You can use other types of apples, but firm, sweet apples work best.
  • If you don’t have challah or brioche, a sturdy white bread can also be used.
